Vein Treatment

Microsclerotherapy is a technique of injecting thread or spider veins with a special substance known as a "sclerosant", usually a solution called sodium tetradecyl sulphate that causes swelling in the veins wall.

If the vein is small enough, the swelling will destroy the vein over several weeks, making it much less noticeable or even invisible. Microsclerotherapy is normally used for the treatment of leg thread veins and is rarely used for the treatment of facial veins, where laser treatments are often favoured, owing to the small possibility of scarring that can occur.

During the consultation an ultrasound doppler is done to make sure there is no back flow from the veins which may result in an unsatisfactory treatment.

There is usually minimal or no discomfort during microsclerotherapy injections due to the size of the needle and the superficial injection technique. Following injections compression stocking are applied which may be worn for three weeks post procedure to help assist shrinkage of the thread veins. A follow up is booked 2 weeks from the procedure. During this session the are might be treated again, either with the sclerosant or with Laser. The final follow up is booked 8 weeks from the first procedure to evaluate the final result.

All options can be further discussed with the Doctor during the consultation.

Our doctors'
notes:

1/

Keeping the compression stocking dry and try and raise your legs as much as possible during the first 24 hours.

Remove the stocking after 24 hours. Short walks are fine, but try to avoid vigorous exercise for a few days;

2/

Wear your compression stockings if advised, for three weeks after the last treatment; These should always be worn before getting out of bed.

3/

Hydrocortisone has to be applied on the area treated for 3 days post treatment prior to wearing stockings and after removing them in the evening.

4/

Avoid Aspirin-based painkillers and replacing them with paracetamol for six weeks after the last treatment.

5/

Contact the clinic immediately if you notice any signs of infection or a sudden increase in pain.
